NEW DELHI: India could soon become a global sourcing hub for soy sauce as FieldFresh Foods, a joint-venture between Bharti Enterprises and Del Monte Pacific, has partnered with Japanese food company, Kikkoman, to manufacture its products here.
"While we will start with making and selling Kikkoman products in India, the technical collaboration could mature into something bigger in future," said Rakesh Bharti Mittal, chairman, FieldFresh Foods.
Bharti will manufacture Kikkoman products at its manufacturing and R&D centre in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, that was set up at a cost of Rs 150 crore. Osamu Mogi, director and executive corporate officer of international operations division at Kikkoman told TOI the Japan-headquartered company would also look to set up a plant in India to supply to its markets in the US and Europe. "With a surge in specialised restaurants offering Oriental cuisine, we are expecting the partnership to also give a significant boost to our B2B business," Mittal said. Apart from the traditional Kikkoman soy sauce, the company is also in the process of developing a variant to suit Indian taste buds.
"Indians have a habit of adding large quantities of soy sauce to their noodles to make it darker," said Yogesh Bellani, CEO of FieldFresh Foods. "This would make the food more salty, therefore, we are developing a variant of soy sauce with less salt."
The company will also launch other sauces from the Kikkoman stable, including oyster and teriyaki
